The journey
The Rwenzori Mountains offer an extraordinary progression of landscapes: montane forest, bamboo, heather, bogs and alpine terrain. This proposed route climbs through Nyabitaba, John Matte and Bujuku to Elena Hut, before the Margherita attempt and a return through Kitandara and Guy Yeoman.
Is this trek right for you?
This is a strenuous, high-altitude itinerary with a technical summit climb involving ropes and specialist equipment. It is best considered by fit, experienced trekkers after a suitability discussion with the mountain team. Seven days is demanding; ask us about a longer programme with additional acclimatisation time or a lower-level trek.
UWA’s general guidance describes a 9–12-day technical ascent for summit climbers, while the Central Circuit operator publishes a seven-day option. We will agree a suitable schedule with you and the mountain operator before confirmation.
Your route at a glance
Seven days covers the mountain circuit. Arrival, preparation nights and transfers from Kampala, Entebbe or Fort Portal require additional time.
Day by day
Times and elevations are approximate planning guides, not fixed performance targets. Weather, trail conditions, acclimatisation and guide decisions can change the daily programme.
DAY 1
Kasese → Mihunga gate → Nyabitaba Hut
Approx. 1,615 m → 2,651 m · 5–6 hours
Meet your mountain team for an equipment check, park registration and a route briefing. After the transfer from Kasese, begin on paths through farmland and montane forest, following the Mubuku valley before a sustained climb to Nyabitaba. Look and listen for forest birds and monkeys along the way.
Overnight: Nyabitaba Hut
DAY 2
Nyabitaba → John Matte Hut
Approx. 2,651 m → 3,500 m · 7–8 hours
Descend to Kurt Shafer Bridge, then work your way through bamboo, mossy rocks and wet ground. Higher up, giant heather and distinctive mountain plants change the character of the trail. Cloud permitting, there may be views towards the high peaks. This is a long trekking day; steady pacing matters.
Overnight: John Matte Hut
DAY 3
John Matte → Bujuku Hut
Approx. 3,500 m → 3,962 m · 4–5 hours
Cross the Bujuku River and continue through the Lower and Upper Bigo bogs. Giant lobelias, wetland vegetation and the approach to Lake Bujuku make this a memorable stage. Follow your guide’s chosen crossings before reaching the hut in the high valley between the surrounding mountains.
Overnight: Bujuku Hut
DAY 4
Bujuku → Elena Hut
Approx. 3,962 m → 4,541 m · 5–6 hours
Climb above Lake Bujuku through groundsel vegetation and increasingly rocky terrain. Take the steep branch towards Elena Hut, the staging point for the proposed summit attempt. Settle in, check technical equipment with your guides and prepare for an early start. Conditions are cold and accommodation is basic.
Overnight: Elena Hut
DAY 5
Elena → Margherita Peak attempt → Kitandara
Summit 5,109 m; overnight around 4,000 m · A very long summit and descent day; allow the full day
Start before dawn if your guides judge conditions suitable. The ascent involves exposed rock and glacier or ice travel, using ropes and specialist equipment under mountain-guide supervision. The summit is an objective, never a guarantee. Return to Elena, then continue over Scott-Elliot Pass towards the Kitandara Lakes as conditions and the team’s pace allow. Your guides may change the plan or turn back.
Overnight: Kitandara Hut
DAY 6
Kitandara → Guy Yeoman Hut
Via Freshfield Pass, approx. 4,282 m; overnight 3,261 m · 6–7 hours
Climb towards Freshfield Pass before beginning a long descent over rocky, often wet ground. Clear weather opens views across the mountain landscape. Continue past the Bujongolo rock shelter and down towards Guy Yeoman, taking care on steep and slippery sections.
Overnight: Guy Yeoman Hut
DAY 7
Guy Yeoman → Nyabitaba → Mihunga gate
Approx. 3,261 m → 1,615 m · 6–7 hours
Descend the Kichuchu section with your guides, crossing streams and moving through bamboo and forest. Pass Nyabitaba to complete the circuit, then continue to the gate. Finish with the mountain team before your arranged onward transfer. A community visit or cultural performance can be discussed separately, subject to local arrangements.
Overnight: Trek ends; onward arrangements on request
